Osteopathy is a system of gentle manipulation which aims at restoring health by removing musculoskeletal restrictions to blood flow and nerve supply allowing the body to find balance and heal itself. Osteopaths consider each person as an individual and adjust treatments to address accordingly.
The osteopathic concept was first devised by Dr AT Still in late 1800s America, after years of rigorous anatomical study. He concluded that maintenance of good mechanical function is essential for good health. Osteopaths use a combination of
soft tissue, fascia
and joint mobilisation techniques. child Osteopath cranial osteopathy
Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle form of osteopathic treatment and involves very gentle techniques based on the application of finger light pressure to the head, base of the spine or any other part of the body.
In the early 1900s William G Sutherland observed a subtle, rhythmical shape change throughout the body which can be felt by the osteopath's highly developed sense of touch. Using this approach the osteopath learns to listen to and be guided by the body.
Cranial osteopathy is a gentle but effective way of releasing accumulated physical and emotional strain patterns and is also is particularly suited to the treatment of babies and children. child Osteopath

A baby's skull is subject to enormous compression strains during the birthing process., While most of these strains naturally resolve themselves, there are times, particularly after a particularly slow or rapid labour or when forceps or ventouse interventions have been necessary, when some of these strains persist and cause difficulties. If a baby is particularly grumpy or unsettled , if they have difficulty sleeping or feeding, this may be due to some residual strain in the cranial mechanism and worth assessing by an osteopath.
As children grow their bodies undergo considerable change. Osteopaths are skilled in being able to examine and assess, any conditions or injuries that may arise as your child develops and help the body to adapt to the growth and developmental changes.
When you arrive at clinic a detailed case history will be taken.
I will first ask you about the details of the problem you would like my help with and then a detailed medical case history will be taken. Osteopathy is a holistic practice and the more information I can gain about your general health the better I will be able to tailor your treatment to you specific needs..
All information given is strictly confidential and subject to GPDR regulations.
Once this has been done, I will ask you to remove some clothing so that I can make a full assessment of your musculo-skleletal system. If you would prefer not to do so, that's also fine.
I will then ask you to perform some simple movements so that I can establish where you problem orirginates.
Treatment is quite gentle, either involving soft tissue work and joint mobilisation, which may on occasion involve a popping noise, or the gentle placement of my hands on your head or base of the spine , if I am using cranial techniques. Treatments are often a combination of different types of osteopathic techniques.
After hands on treatment is completed I will give you some exercises to help maintain what has been achieved during treatment.
